about

Singer/songwriter Quinn Erwin was at a crossroads. Having recently relocated to Nashville, he found himself surrounded by a series of losses in his own life and in the lives of those close to him. Compelled by a desire to comfort the mourning, Erwin suddenly found himself embarking on a new direction musically – one inspired by the notion that death is a homecoming, rather than a reason for grief.

“I couldn't recall if I had ever heard any songs about death that were triumphant and celebratory,” he explains. “So I made it my mission to write one.”

That initial inspiration became a verse. The verse became a song. The song would eventually take Erwin in an unexpected direction entirely, launching the creation of a band.

Afterlife Parade was born.

As a solo artist, Quinn Erwin has been writing and performing for the past 12 years. He released his first EP A New Day in January 2009 followed by the full length A Million Miles Away in May 2010. Most recently, he was the Grand Prize Winner of the 2010 Jansport Battle of the Bands and played at The Forecastle Festival in Louisville, KY alongside The Flaming Lips, The Smashing Pumpkins, Spoon, and She & Him. He was also named IMVU Artist of the Month in August 2010.

Released on January 31, 2011 and produced by Jeremy McCoy (bass player for The Fray), Afterlife Parade’s debut EP Death is the first in a two-part concept album of sorts. The songs focus on fate, the end of the world, the death of an ideal, and the comfort from the dying to the loved ones they leave behind. The companion EP Rebirth is due to be released in April 2011.

“Death, as an EP, is deep, dark and atmospheric,” Erwin says. “Rebirth is the exact opposite – it’s upbeat, percussive and a bit electronic.”

A fitting metaphor for an artist with many dimensions himself.

Track Name: Death
Truth, Truth be told
You might shake your fist at death, but we all grow old
Search, Search with you might
But the fountain of youth is running dry
But the fountain of youth is running dry

Truth, Truth be told
That body you're wearing is not your home
Feel, feel the scars
Cresting in your skin and in your soul
Oh, the dirge has started, can you feel the pull?

There's just nowhere to go
There's just nowhere to hide
When your time is coming
It's everywhere you look
It's always on your mind
You can't escape the tide

There's just nowhere to run
There's just nowhere to hide
When the fire's coming
It's everywhere you look
It's always on your mind
As your days go by
Can you feel your soul
Start to lose control
As the light comes crashing
Everything you see
Everything you'll be
is pulling you under
Track Name: Nothing But Love Can Stay
I found you in Gabriel’s yard
Staring at the people running through the fields
I grabbed your hand so tight
And we watched a world leave its world behind
St. Louis is New York City
New York City is like ancient Pompeii
Florida is underwater now
And the West Coast is a torn out page in history

But though earthquakes roar underneath
And mountains crumble into seas
Though the winds may level cities
When it all burns away, nothing but love can stay

We left our bags out on the porch
As the clouds began to churn
I thought I heard a trumpet saying
“It’s only getting worse”
So as the rain began to fall
I held you like a knife against my skin
I begged God for one more day and then
I kissed what I knew goodbye

But though earthquakes roar underneath
And mountains crumble into seas
Though the winds may level cities
When it all burns away, nothing but love can stay

Nothing but love can stay
Track Name: Arrows Fly
I should've know before
When I lead the charge

I felt the warmth leave my side
I felt a pain between my shoulders
I turned to face them all alone
I saw blades and feathers soar
Family struck me one by one
In the name of our Father's son

And arrows flew from my brother's bows
I broke the shafts and kept on running
Didn't know this was a civil war
But then arrows flew from my brother's bows

Oh, oh, oh

Will the poison run its course
'Fore I find a place to hide
'Cause that house just isn't home at all
I don't know if it ever was
I saw the anger in their eyes
What did I do that was so wrong
I feel just like a wounded deer
And I'm running numb
I'm running numb

Arrows flew from my brother's bows
I broke the shafts and kept on running
Didn't know this was a civil war
But then arrows flew from my brother's bows

Father, could you tell me please
'Cause I'm bending down on wounded knees
What did I do?
'Cause I'm not sure.
I just want you to be proud of me
Track Name: Simple
Well, there’s a church in my heart
It has no steeple or a parking lot
But you can come if you want
It’s free of charge and the doors don’t shut
And we could talk all day
Like age old friends
And love each other
Like the world won’t end

I’ve tried so hard to figure you out
You’re way too big to get my head around
But if love is this simple, could we throw out all the rules?
‘Cause I’m living on the edge of giving into you

You got grace in your pockets
Well I got sin in my shoes
I try to hide it underfoot
So you won’t have a clue,
But I limp like a beggar
And lie like a fool.
And you read me like a poem
And adore me like a jewel

Chorus

In the pasture of your thoughts
Is there a place for me?
Where the wind blows steady
And we rest in peace
‘Cause the world’s been a fighter
On I’m on flat on my back
And I need your song to wake me up again

Chorus

I sing Oh
‘Cause I’m living on the edge of giving into you
Track Name: Afterlife Parade
Hold my hand
As I step into the great unknown
I can feel the cadence now
Bass drums are leading my soul
So I peel the world away
Just like an ancient scab
And it feels so good
‘Cause life hurts so bad

I say oh oh

Don’t cry for me
When you find that I'm gone
'Cause I'm roaming free
Into the arms of love
And you can wear my sweater
If it keeps you warm
‘Cause there’s no winter
Where I’m going now

I said oh oh

I can feel the ticker tape
On my face
As I march from death
Into an afterlife parade

Can you hear the trumpets
Erupting from our lungs
As we join in the chorus
Celebrating the end of us
And we will open up our eyes
Yeah, we won't need strength to stand
For everything that's right
Is an instrument in our hands

We all sing oh oh
